Finally the compositions for kishkintha and sundara kandam are ready and the choreography has been done excellently by Anitha Guha.

Our programme is going to be featured at Cleveland Tyagaraja Aradhana on the 29th of April,a friday.

Sriranjani,myself,Nisha Rajagopalan and Gayathri Venkatraghavan are going to be singers.

You can have an abridged version thro the Jaya Tv in future.

We are all reaching Cleveland on the 19th of April.

I have a concert at New Jersey on the 16th and at Sincinatti on the 24th.

I am back at Chennai on the 3rd of May.

Friends,
this is a review i got thro mail from my disciple ,Smt.Uma Money who is an established singer herself.

If I had to write a caption for your concert that evening I would call it ‘Restoring Carnatic Classical Music to its Pristine Form’. This is the feeling you evoked in me. I say this not to please you but with conviction and also with my family background in music. I felt this was one concert that started the season for me and would end on that note. In any concert one should be able to experience sublime bliss and also learn something from the artiste. I felt you are an artiste who is a natural singer…..you do not need to make any extraordinary efforts.

What I liked the most:

Your ability to sing any raga with élan savouring the finer nuances of every note in that ragam scale

Your rhythm with yourself getting extrapolated to your audience and the universe

Your voice had a deep resonating quality and sounded like it was coming from a deep pit. The ‘Anulom – Vilom’ and other breathing exercises are surely helping you

Your rhythmical patterns with swarams that could end anywhere but had the great connect to start with your first line of the neraval

Your music was like water flowing amidst the rocks……..the water found its own way (I think you understand what I mean here)

Your seamless flow of music from start to end

Freinds,

I want to share with you all about the two major events that are going to happen next week,on the 21st and the 22nd of November,2009.

1.On the 21st,Saturday,it is planned to conduct a SAPTHASWARA DEVATHA YAGNA under the auspices of the Sabha -Rasika Fine Arts at Hindu Garodia High School,West Mambalam,Chennai. between 9 to 11 am.

The main aim of the Yagna is to invoke the blessings of the Sapthaswara Devathas to bless all the musicians , the organisers ,the audience ,the media people and the critiques who will be participating in the ensuing DECEMBER MUSIC SEASON which a unique festiva of its kind in the entire world.

2.I am happy to announce that my students who are residing in India have planned to celebrate my twenty five years of teaching music.

A review of my recent Singapore concert

At the vocal concert by Neyveli Santhanagopalan presented by Alapana Arts a week later on Aug 23, the singer presented an orthodox module at the Glass Hall of the Singapore Arts Museum.Carnatic musicians build their credentials based on a few key pillars, among which the teacher or the school and their own individual styles are prominent. The highly creative
nature of the art puts a premium on pedigree and the overall style. Santhanagopalan is a top-ranking vocalist from India and his music is artistic and entertaining at the same time. The creative aspects were at a teasing quotient and a balanced menu was on show for the diverse audience, including a few non-Indians.
His musical recipe is a simple amalgam of pitch-perfect vocal tone, measured proportions of songs and creative journeys
and fond renditions that attempt to recreate the composer’s mind. Santhanagopalan is a famed disciple of the famous musician and scholar,Madurai TN Seshagopalan,a trail-blazing vocalistof recent times. Besides assimilating the teacher’s scholarship and his exploratory tendency, Santhanagopalan has chiselled his unique franchise with lusher touches and powerful lyrical mastery of songs
and their creative contexts.He, in fact, often conducts impromptu dialogues with the audience to help the audience feel the music
beyond the melody.He presented a conventional programme suite of about 12 melodies, with the main piece in the raga Kiravani
(akin to the C-minor scale of Western music)floating on a 12th century lyric called Thevaram (hymns in praise of one of
the trinity of Hindu gods –Lord Shiva).Like his guru, he unleashed his penchant for rhythmic explorations of notations in the creative part,feeding the intellectual appetite of the audience. The scholarly musician concluded the concert with a thillana
in the alternate north Indian Drupad style. The organisers,Alapana Arts, provided competent accompanists who sustained the laconic
mood of the evening.

It was a refreshing experience for me to venture with a veena concert at Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan today.

What you sing,you can play in the veena ;but what the veena tells,you cannot sing.

Such is the grandeur of Veena music.

Krishnostsava performances
The Percussive Arts Centre conducted the Krishnotsava recently, in collaboration with the Sri Jarama Seva Mandali. Srividya Ramanath, who gave a vocal recital here, is a disciple of Neyveli Santhanagopalan, popular artiste. She has won prizes in many competitions and has performed in several sabhas both in and outside the country. An MCom graduate, Srividya is also teaching young aspirants at Maanava Seva Kendra, Bangalore. She presented compositions of Purandaradasa, Narayanna Theertha, Tyagaraja, Swathi Thirunal and a few others, in a pleasant manner. Both the ‘Paripalayamam’ and ‘Gana Murthe’ were pleasing. Though ‘Kshemam Kuru Gopala’ was on Krishna, it was a less known composition and a welcome change from the routine ones! The ragalapana was good. Devotional like - ‘Wale Manave’, ‘Nindathi Charanam’ - were rendered with lilting melody. All that she needed now is some more stage experience to reach great heights. Shankar Raman supported well on Violin while N Vasudeva and Bharadwaja Sathavalli provided the percussive support.

Shakespeare's amazing words played out in my mind , for the full duration of the second day that I attended.
Having wisely declined a seat among the Tansens , this Kansen settled comfortably behind Akellaji , for a ringside view.
And what I saw that day was an amazing experience that left me sad that I did not formally learn Music.
Blessed ,are all of you ,who can absorb it and reproduce it.

The Day was essentially conducted in two halves and two modes.
The second one was like a maths Class .I had the uncanny sense to glide into the anteroom and do some archival updations for NSG.

There were moments when NSG's brain too got heated up and he sneaked inside my room and cooled down with snatches of Amir Khans Yaman from a Concert.

Occasionally I could hear conversations like

The one from the tiniest tot
"Sir is this all homework ?" (in the hope that she could relax this day)
and Akellaji would reply
"Yes that is homework and right now both of us are sitting in the home.So get going with the calculations"

Or this from a senior ,
Affter 5 ....how many more ?
and Akellaji would say

"Right upto 32 , but I will stop somewhere in between .Getting old , you see"

Spare a thought for his disciples when Akellaji was younger

Otherwise it was a daunting afternoon , the cheers coming up during the Coffee Breaks and the occasional humorous quote.

The Morning was one I will remember for a long long time.
Laya-Disabled that I am , I could "feel" the thrill of the perfect landing after a round of swaras.
The Students took almost half a day to fully realise that Akellaji would accept a set of swaras only after a recital of the Jathis .
Or
that Akellaji would insist on "not resorting" to saying "Thom" When "Tho" would suffice ( We are not Mridanagam Vidwans here - leave the anuswara stuff to them"

Or Akellaji would insist that the student closes his eyes while singing , for better concentration .
Midway through the first half all these rules were working beautifully.

The Rythmic exercises looked so good to me - draped in Lathangi , Shanmukhapriya , Simhendramadhyama ,Panthuvarali......

Reminded me of the days of Coaching sessions in Cricket and lessons in "timing" of the shot.

It was time to move away from the Chaos theory.
Possibly The Good Lord did build our world like a perfect Clock-perfect in its smallest detail.

As the students started to get a feel being Razor sharp , Akellaji moved on to aesthetic patterns .
Patterns that were designed to explode in ones face with the raw power of laya , while carrying the listeners along,giving them a sense of anticipation.

It was great to watch exercises of different levels of difficulty being handled with aplomb by the participants
They must have gone through a set of jathis/ Swaras for about 150 -200 times in the morning.

No words can describe the hospitality that one will come across in NSG's home.Mrs NSG took great care
with the details- that included preventing me from leaving the house -in the afternoon -for the day !

As I said earlier , working in the zone where NSG operates , one gets a feel of turning into a snow capped peak-His effect on you is soft , relentless - building layer upon layer.
It was my privilege to see two great teachers at work simultaneoulsy.

Nothing , not even the unruly traffic back home could shake my convinction that this world ticks to the beat of a Heavenly Force .
Amazing.

Sri Akella Mallikarjuna Shirma's Workshop at Ramapuram

Sri.Akella Mallikarjuna Shirma's visit to our house and his unforgettable workshop mainly on 'Thala prasthara' took the participants(three of them post graduates in music and four of them graded artists of the AIR) to their hieghts in learning fresh approaches in laya techniques and understanding their own creative instincts with the opening up of the limitless horizons of the laya world by sri.Akella.

Personally I gained a lot of inspiration and guidance from him as to how an ideal teacher must live ,act and interact with anyone who wants to learn.

His total surrendering himself to the Almighty comes out through his words of conviction, so appealing and soothing to the mind.

He often admitted that in his long period of teaching as a lecturer in Govt of AP music college,he could not give a direct simple way of teaching.But later when he evolved a system of simple techniques thro which the entire learning process could be made so easy,naturally he wanted to propogate it to many,and mainly the common man.

I would definitely say with my experience as a teacher that Sri.Akella garu's simple techniques in both laya and swara need to be propagated for the sake of the ' kids' ;It is so unique and it will compliment any school of teaching in a very effective manner. As Akella ji said,the laya models if practiced by students at initial levels will give them immense confidence to further proceed in the subject;

Not only musical aspirants but anyone can learn his methods and their general levels of awareness,sharpness and understanding in any subject are bound to increase multifold.

In total,Sri Akella's two and half days of musical interaction at Chennai was a pure musical blessings to all of us.

Dear rasikas,

I feel very glad to announce that Sri.Akella Mallikarjuna Shirma garu is coming to Chennai on the 3rd March morning from Hyderabad to conduct a workshop on his "Easy techniques to approach Swara Kalpana and Raga Alapana" along with his unique 'ThaLa Prasthara".

The venue will be my Ramapuram house.

The Workshop Sessions would be as follows:

On 3.3.09 & 4.3.09 : two sessions each day : 9 am to 1 pm & 2 to 5 pm

On 5.2.09 : only one session : 9 am to 1 pm only.

He needs maximum 8 students of good standards(which I have already in my students).

And anyone who is willing to come can come as observers.

I am sure this workshop will enhance our mathematical insights into music and also equally give more clarity on swarapragna.

If someone wants to have a talk with him,they are welcome to do so after 5 pm on both the 3rd and the 4th.
